When in 2012 The Oxford Junior Dictionary (aimed at 7 year olds) was updated, 50 words describing the natural world were left out in favour of other more ‘techie’ words.

There were many protests from people saying that the words connected with nature are an essential part of childhood. The work posed the questions: Do the dictionary changes reflect the decline in outdoor play and the increase in interior solitary childhoods of today? Are these words important or is it just nostalgia? If children don’t get the chance to be in nature why would they care about it when they are adults?
